Cobblestone roads are really pretty to me. They're made by using lots of smooth, round stones and embedding them into the ground close together to form a roadway. Although they're pretty, and functional, cobblestone roads can be very bumpy.
Imagine you're going to construct a roadway of faith for your friends to follow. You've collected several smooth, round stones about the size of your fist. On each of the stones, you've written some of characteristics of God, as you understand Him: cheerleader, guidance counselor, life guard, butler (?!)… Are these words you would use?
Sadly, these are some of the most common descriptions of God that people use today. Each description really tells more about the person using it, than it does about Jesus. If we were to pave a road with these stones, we, and anyone who would come after us, would be in for a bumpy ride, for sure!
How do you discover the truth? Jesus said, "I am the truth." He didn't compromise when He was tempted. He didn't tolerate sin. He was compassionate and full of grace. God's word is truth, and the more you allow yourself to be changed by it, the more you will be able to bless others with it. Our God is a God of wonder! A God of mystery! A God who challenges us! And there's not one challenge He allows in your life that He isn't willing to help you work through. Do you believe that? Your belief and knowledge of the truth is what is going to lay a foundation for a road on which others can safely travel. If you know His word, you will know the truth!
A simple prayer...
"Precious Lord, reveal Yourself to me... You are holy... Holy." Lord, help me to know You better. I don't want to be someone who makes a road that causes others to stumble. I want to build a clear path to Your throne! May I know the truth, and speak it bravely. In Jesus' name. Amen.
More time…
God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth. -John 4:24
See , I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed. -Isaiah 28:16
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like the wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. -Matthew 7:24-27
Now what?...
Make a list of words or phrases you would use to describe God.
Investigate each description to see if it is biblical. Use your Bible, a concordance, a trusted friend or family member to help discover the truth!
Commit yourself to knowing Him better.
